Choosing a Wedding Dress that Captures Your Personal Style

A common question I get as a stylist: How do I shop for a wedding dress that captures me as a bride and also stays true to my personal style?

First of all, your bridal gown and overall look should be an extension of your personal style. I always tell my brides you want to be a 2.0 bridal, elevated, sparkly version of yourself on your wedding day. 🙂

If you describe your style as glamorous, feminine, and lavishly stylish, you’re most likely going to prefer dresses that has a bit (or a lot) of sparkle, the ability to make a dramatic entrance at your wedding aisle, and not to mention an extremely flatting fit that accentuates all the right places. Designers that carry this are Berta, Galia Lahav, Inbal Dror, J’aton Couture, Pallas Couture, Ines Di Santo, and Monique Lhuillier. These designers are of the brides who want to be seen, feel sexy, and who appreciate classic silhouettes with a modern, sexy take. Lots of off the shoulder necklines and illusion bodices with long trains and you will rarely find a dress in their collections without full embellishment.

Keep in mind – you can still have a fully adorned dress without the $10,000 price tag. Most of these designers I’ve mentioned have both their couture collection as well as their “diffusion” collection, which carry the aesthetic of the designer without the hefty price tag. *See Muse by Berta, Gala by Galia Lahav, PURE by Inbal Dror, PALLAS Collective by Pallas Couture, and Ines by Ines Di Santo, Bliss by Monique Lhuillier. These are going to range between $4,000 – $6,500.

If you describe yourself as a free bird and have more of a bohemian taste preference, you will probably gravitate towards dresses that are described as modern-boheime. These dresses are usually going to have flowy silhouettes, bohemian inspired embroideries and laces, hand crocheted, beaded florals on un-traditional color ways like nudes, blushes and creamy ivories – while still remaining romanic and feminine. Some designers that match this aesthetic are Yolan Cris, Rue de Seine, Naeem Khan, Liz Martinez, Grace Loves Lace, Chosen by One Day Bridal, Odylyne the Ceremony, Christos Costarellos, and Made With Love Bridal.

If you tend to wear more classic, tailored pieces you may be drawn to dresses that have clean lines, minimal embellishment, and have a tailored, classic but elegant and feminine feel. Some designers that capture exactly this are Carolina Herrera, Reem Acra, Oscar De La Renta, Monique Lhuillier, and Peter Langner.
If you are a street-style queen, are constantly going after the latest “It Girl” style, and wish to embody this on your big day, these designers are worth checking out: Rime Arodaky, Viktor & Rolf, Chosen by One Day Bridal, Danielle Frankel, Toni Maticevski, and Unbridaled by Dan Jones.

You will know when you find the dress when you feel as though it was MADE for you! When you feel like the designer had YOU in mind when he or she was creating it. Don’t stop searching until you feel this. 🙂 Happy shopping lovelies!
